Alhumdulillah, the blessed month of Ramadan is here and Zakat Foundation of America (ZF) has begun its annual Ramadan Program in over 40 countries around the world.

One area we are giving special attention to this Ramadan is Dadaab camp in northeast Kenya, where Somali refugees have fled to escape their country’s famine and political violence.

The Dadaab camp was established in the 1990s to accommodate no more than 90,000 refugees. Dadaab camp has now become a complex of three refugee camps: Dagahale, Ifo and Hagadera. Today, over 500,000 refugees reside in the camp and it has become Kenya’s third largest city.

Since the beginning of Ramadan, ZF has been able to feed over 500 families residing in the Ifo Somali refugee camp. Ifo was created last year to address the overcrowding in Dadaab due to famine crisis and ongoing violence in Somalia.

After consulting with local leaders, ZF has been able to identify the most vulnerable group and distributed food packages accordingly. These families have received food packages that contain enough food for the next two weeks of Ramadan.

Despite an attack yesterday in Dadaab camp and increasing violence, the ZF team was able to execute the food distributions safely. The camp leaders and refugees consisting of many women, children and elderly were all very grateful to ZF. May God bless them and bless our work.

Please remember that Ramadan is a time to share the blessings and now is the perfect time to help those in need through our Ramadan 2012 campaign.
