There are an estimated twenty to thirty million Muslims in China, who compose roughly two percent of the population. The highest concentrations of Chinese Muslims are found in the northwest provinces of Ningxia, Xinjiang, and Gansu. It is in the Gansu Province that Zakat Foundation of America is most active, addressing the needs of the poor and needy amongst China’s underpriveleged.

As religious and sometimes ethnic minorities, the Muslims of China have not benefitted from China’s economic development as much as the non-Muslim majority. The diverse members of the Chinese Muslim community, be they ethnic Chinese (Hui) or Turkic, are in need of educational opportunities and skills-training that will allow them to improve their social conditions while maintaining their faith tradition.

There are an unknown number of refugees from Kashmir in China. There are also hundreds of thousands of refugees from neighboring Vietnam, North Korea and Burma who relay on foreign aid for basic necessities.
