Ethiopia suffers from chronic and widespread poverty that pushes 44 percent of its population under the poverty line. In a country where approximately 80% of the population is involved in the agriculture sector, frequent drought and poor cultivation practices result in food insecurity and lack of access to safe water for many Ethiopians. Half of the country’s children are chronically malnourished, and another 38 percent are considered to be underweight.

Despite its precarious economic situation, Ethiopia is still a safe haven for refugees fleeing conflict in neighboring Somalia, Eritrea, and the Sudan. It currently hosts an estimated 149,000 refugees, most of who are in great need of humanitarian aid to meet their basic needs.
