Even before the deadly earthquake that decimated many parts of Haiti in January 2010, the country suffered from the crushing poverty that had earned it the title of poorest nation in the Western Hemisphere. Eighty percent of the population lives under the poverty line and amongst them, 54% are considered to be living in extreme poverty.

Although Haiti was able to feed itself until the 1980s, corruption, political instability and interference, along with unfair competition from foreign imports weakened the ability of Haitian farmers to compete. As a result, many rural families migrated to the overcrowded capital, Port au Prince to eke out meager livings. Little has been done to rebuild the country since the earthquake that led to the death of at least 230,000 people. Many communities still struggle to find adequate food, shelter and occupantions. Substantial international assistance is needed to help the country prosper.
