Myanmar, also known as Burma, is one of Asia’s poorest countries although it is rich in natural resources. Mismanagement of the country and corruption are major contributions to the country’s economic woes. Despite Myanmar’s increasing oil and gas revenue, socio-economic conditions continue to deteriorate in the country.

In 2008, the country was rocked by Cyclone Nargis, which killed more than 146,000 people, destroyed thousands of homes and caused over $10 billion (USD) in damage. An estimated 2 to 3 million people were made homeless by the Cyclone. Now as the country works to rebuild, investment and trade sanctions by the governments of the United States, Canada, and the European Union are yet another obstacle on the road to self-sufficiency for the poor of Myanmar.
