Syria
Poverty rates in Syria have increased significantly in the past few years with an estimated 11.4 percent of its population living in extreme poverty. A severe drought that began in 2004 and lasted four years severely weakened Syria’s agriculture sector, devastated the lives of poor farmers and destabilized food security for the country as a whole.
The drought has also permanently affected the country’s water sources, since the high number of wells decreased during the drought, and caused significant degradation of the groundwater table.
While Syria has been home to hundreds of thousands of Palestinian refugees for decades, the latest conflict in neighboring Iraq has caused an estimated 1.2 million Iraqis to seek refuge in the country. The majority of these refugees are in need of intensive amounts of assistance, which places a burden on Syria’s already distressed economy.
